Adobe Photoshop

INTRODUCTION

Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing software application produced by Adobe Systems. It can be used to create works such as posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, and books. InDesign can also publish content suitable for tablet devices in conjunction with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite. Graphic designers and production artists are the principal users, creating and laying out periodical publications, posters, and print media. It also supports export to EPUB and SWF formats to create e-books and digital publications, including digital magazines, and content suitable for consumption on tablet computers. In addition, InDesign supports XML, style sheets, and other coding markup, making it suitable for exporting tagged text content for use in other digital and online formats.

Newer versions of InDesign can as a rule open files created by older versions, but the reverse is not true. Current versions can export the InDesign file as an IDML file (InDesign Markup Language), which can be opened by InDesign versions from CS4 upwards; older versions from CS4 down can export to an INX file (InDesign Interchange format).

To learn the software this semester you will view and use tutorials from Lynda.com (available free through the university) interspersed with some of my tutorials. Lynda.com is an online learning platform that helps anyone learn software, technology and creative skills. You have access to the Lynda.com video library of courses taught by recognized industry experts.

You can go as fast as you desire. Some of the videos are short, others may take hours to complete. Schedule your time appropriately to finish on time. If you take your time and follow the instructions fully, you will find that each lesson is very straightforward and easy to complete by the deadline.

Near the bottom of this lesson there is a link to the current online manual for InDesign and an embedded PDF manual with in-depth instructions on everything the software can do. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time.
